Arthroscopic Treatment of Osteoarthritic Knees

Abstract
In the treatment of degenerative osteoarthritis of the knee, nonsurgical treamtnet such drug therapy, physical therapy and surgical treatment such as corrctive osteotomy an arthroplasty were widely used, but recently many authors reported that
arthroscopic surgery was effective in patients who are relatively young age without symptom improvement regardless of nonsurgical treatment and who have persistent pain, swelling, ligamentous instability, mechanical locking an daily living difficuty.
During the period from Aug. 1992 to Jan. 1995, 17poatients922 knees) with osteoarthritis of the knee underwent arthroscopic surgery in the department of orthopaedic surgery, Kyung Hee University Hospital. We analyses the results after average
follow up of 14.1 months99-26 months). There were 3 males and 17 males and 17 females, whose average age was 57.4 years old(46-66 years0. There were 5 right knees and 7 left knees and 5 both knees. We performed abrasion arthroplasty in 11 cases,
arthroscopic debridemenrt in 8 cases, synovectomy in 8 cases, osteophyte removal in 4 cases, partial menisectomy in 1 cases and excision of suprapatellar plica in seven cases. According to radiological classification of kAhl?ack(1968), there were 3 caseds in
Grade
I, 9 cases in Grade II, 6 cases in Grade II and 4 cases in Grade IV.Outerbridge classification of articular cartilage change showed Grade I 5 cases, II 7 cases III 6 cases and IV 4 cases. At last follow up, clinical results according to
Baumgarther(1990) showed overall rates of excellent and in 14cases(63.6%).
